Early Spring Dormant Spraying Spraying helps prevent: Scale insects, mites, aphids, leaf curl, anthracnose, mealy bugs, hibernating caterpillars and various insect eggs. Spray material: "Dormant spray oil." lime-sulfur, or a combination. Dormant oil, which is safe for the environment, works by smothering over-wintering insects and eggs. When to spray: Spray your plants after there is no danger of a freeze for a few days but before the plants begin to bud. Often this is a very short window of opportunity, so prepare in advance. Sprayers to use: For trees up to about 35 feet, use a Hudson TromboneŽ sprayer. This slide-type sprayer builds high pressure and is easy to use. It's especially ideal for fruit trees. For lower plants, choose a Hudson compression (pump-type) sprayer. For taller trees or large yards, you may prefer a Hudson IndustroŽ power sprayer.See Catalog Link.
